When you think about it, zombie pranks shouldn’t work, ever. After all, no one thinks zombies actually exist. So why would anyone believe for a second that a prankster shambling toward them in a zombie getup is the real deal?
The answer is that you don’t have to believe that what’s chasing you is a bonafide zombie to become scared shitless. When you see a bloody creature creeping toward you, your first thought isn’t to study the thing to see if it’s genuine. No, this is where instinct takes over, telling you empty your bowels and run like hell.
Still, there’s a reason people are more likely to fall for a zombie prank than one featuring, say, vampires, werewolves, or mummies. It’s the hideous realism of the costumes and makeup. If you think you’re immune to such gory special effects, you obviously haven’t seen what a truly demented zombie prankster is capable of.
To illustrate, here are five of the most awful/awesome zombie pranks of all time. Needless to say, these are elaborate, extreme, borderline asshole-ish stunts that should never be repeated.
This video from the Australian pranksters known as The Royal Stampede captures bystanders’ reactions as they come across what appears to be a zombie attack. At one point (0:37 to be exact), a zombie reaches into a baby carriage and… well, see for yourself. This is the type of thing that would probably get you killed in the United States because there’s a good chance that someone in the crowd would be packing.
The internet-famous duo PrankvsPrank was responsible for this epic zombie hoax. Not content to frighten folks with a few solo zombies, they unleashed an undead horde on an unsuspecting city. Miraculously, no one got shot, which probably had something to do with the fact that the whole thing happened in broad daylight.
This video from Quada Pranks is similar to a lot of other zombie pranks, except for the fact that the zombie is Santa Claus. Unfortunately, being more festive than the average zombie doesn’t save the prankster from getting kicked, punched, and threatened with a bat.
This 2012 video from Vitaly Zdorovetskiy nearly broke the internet for the sixty-thousandth time. It shows a lone zombie terrorizing people in some of the toughest neighborhoods of Miami… until said zombie realizes he’s bitten off more than he can chew (so to speak). Not only does this video cross the line, but so do many of the many racist YouTube comments directed at the prank’s victims.
Conducted by a Brazilian TV show and featuring professional special effects, this elaborate deception is beyond the ability of ordinary pranksters to pull off. And thank goodness for that. While most zombie pranks are designed for quick shocks, this one slowly builds the terror to a cruel crescendo. Skip to the 3:00 mark to go straight to the horror:
In case you’re wondering, almost every other zombie prank video we found was lame for one reason or another. Here are some observations:
- For every zombie prank video, there are skeptics who claim that it’s all staged and the “victims” are just actors. That could be true for any of the above examples, but it definitely appears to be the case with many of the lessor zombie prank videos.
- Most videos demonstrate what we already know – a scared human can escape a shambling zombie in a blink, making fast zombies the preferred option for prank videos.
- Many zombie prank victims probably just think they’re being attacked by some weirdo.
- It’s only funny until someone gets a head shot. Seriously, these pranksters were lucky they didn’t run into any Walking Dead fans with overactive imaginations.
